The people of the Upper Xingu are the Aweti, Kalapalo, Kamaiurá, Kuikuro, Matipu, Mehinako, Nahukuá, Naruvotu, Trumai, Yawalapiti and the Waurá, who despite speaking different languages, understand each other’s languages and share much of the same language. culture.
With body painting and exuberant feather art! Ceramics is one of the greatest characteristics of their culture, with which they produce everyday utensils of rare beauty.
The culture of the Upper Xingu people is closely linked to fishing, hunting and agriculture (especially cassava).
Its myths and traditions related to its worldview, its cosmogony, dialogue directly with all elements of nature.
The villages have a circular formation, with 10 to 20 large Ocas built with a sophisticated weave of different types of wood covered with sape, where family groups of around 10 people live, including young people, adults and the elderly.
In the center of the village there is a smaller building, where men meet to deliberate on the village’s collective decisions. At the bottom of each Oca there is an area similar to a “backyard” for domestic tasks for the residents of each Oca.
Grieving families have the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved one for the last time.
The ceremony involves not only the village that is performing the ritual, but all the people of the upper Xingu, who go to the village to pay homage to Kuarup. All the people of the upper Xingu perform Kuarup annually (when a member of the community dies in the previous year) in their villages, receiving communities from other ethnicities during that period.
Kuarup means (with variations between upper Xingu languages) “the rebirth of the sun”.
It is one of the greatest indigenous rituals in the world!
Full of symbolism, with dozens of steps and complex details. With hundreds of people participating on its last day.
The elaboration of Kuarup, its preparation and rituals last many months. And it culminates in the last few days. Where a trunk is ceremonially chosen by the shamans within the forest, cut, painted and adorned in honor of the deceased person. The trunk is then buried in the center of the village, standing upright, representing the person. The family then gathers around him and cries for the last time.
On the last day of Kuarup, all the people who came to participate in the ritual and until then were staying in camps around the village, enter the central part of the village and practice Uka Uka. A physical fight, similar to Sumo or Wrestling, where the opponent needs to touch the back of their opponent’s knee. Closing Kuarup, with the vigor of the fight, celebrating life!
The people of the upper Xingu like to receive visitors, so they can present their culture, exchange experiences with non-indigenous people and promote their ancient way of life. It is essential to respect indigenous peoples, understanding cultural differences and similarities.
Kuarup is a closed ceremony. Open to guests only. It is, therefore, a great honor to be able to respectfully witness Kuarup.
The village community is grateful for the generosity of its visitors to purchase pieces, ornaments and handcrafted utensils produced by them. This income is very important for indigenous people, who despite their rich ancient culture, face serious problems when relating to the needs and demands of our non-indigenous society.
